After competing for three and a half months, 22 students have qualified to the state speech and debate tournament to be held at Jackson High School in March. Students will represent Southview in almost all categories including Dramatic, Humorous, and Duo Interpretation; Program Oral Interpretation, Informative Speaking, Declamation, Congressional Debate, and Public Forum Debate. Southview placed second overall in the Toledo district.
The tournament saw great success for the Cougars, with the team placing 15th out of 91 teams. Individual accomplishments were plentiful: Cherice Chen and Megan Peng advanced to octafinals in Public Forum Debate. Bella Courts, Sammie Kummer, Grace Jung, Amaan Omer, Ananya Haldankar, Tristen Turkopp and Will King all advanced to quarterfinals in their speech events. And, Katherine Barricklow and Oumeima Djema advanced to the final round of Declamation, with Katherine finishing 7th in the state and Oumaima finishing second, earning the most ones (highest ranks) in her category. Southview also earned a School of Excellence Award in Rhetoric.
