Some of the students in Mrs. Beil’s transition services class recently visited the Sunshine Art Studio in Maumee. The students were able to spend the day touring the facility, and each of them spent time glazing pottery like the pumpkins shown in the accompanying image.
Even though the students clearly enjoyed their time making art, the excursions serve a greater purpose. Mrs. Beil does an excellent job of connecting her students to resources they might visit once they transition out of high school. Her aim is to give the students a certain level of comfort and familiarity, so that they feel like they have options and can explore their community. Other outings have featured a behind-the-scenes tour of the post office, shopping at the mall, and a scavenger hunt at Kroger. Each of these new locations is an opportunity for students to generalize the pragmatic skills they are learning in class…and to have fun doing it!
