The thrilling four months of Ohio speech and debate competition has come to a close, and Southview team members have spent the month of February in postseason qualifying tournaments. As always, the team is cheering as students qualify to compete at both the Ohio Speech and Debate Association’s State Tournament and the National Speech and Debate Association’s National Tournament in Florida.
The team is sending 28 qualifiers to the OSDA State Tournament taking place on March 2 and 3 in Sylvania. This tournament features 86 teams with over one thousand students participating and will spread over several schools in Sylvania. Most of the 28 Southview competitors qualified for this competition at the District Tournament in early February, while others earned spots by excelling in other tournaments both before and after. They are in for two days of marathon competition, pitting them against the best from across the state.
Further ahead, the team will send Ashley Le to Florida in June to compete at the National Tournament. Ashley competes in Dramatic Interpretation, an event where she enacts a variety of fictional characters in a one-woman theatrical performance with no props, no costumes, and limited movement. Ashley is one of two students in Western Ohio that qualified for this summer tournament. Eight other Southview students came close, though, finishing as alternates, which will earn them a spot if the qualifier cannot attend.
That means months more competition for these exceptionally talented students as they perform and debate their way onto stages across the nation.
